21 January - Cape Town Memorable signature holes

Part of what makes golf such a wonderful game is the chance to get out in beautifull scenery and to experience the different designs of golf courses made to fit into their surroundings.

When you think of a golf course you invariably think of one or two special holes on a particular golf course.

I do believe that if you struggle to remember a golf course lay out. Or certain holes. That the designer didn't get it 100% right.
It is also true, that what makes golf so interesting, is that different courses and holes will be memorable for different players.

A memorable hole shouldn't necessarily be the hardest hole. More the way it fits in to the surrounding area. And the way it rewards good shots, and punishes bad shots.

Golf should be fun...It can be infuriating. A great golf hole ads to all of this. You almost have to figure out how to play a good hole.
Where to place your T shot to have a go at the green. Or where to place your T shot on a great par 3.

Royal Cape has got the 14th par 4. It's a great hole. You have to hit two solid shots to get a chance for a birdie.

Clovelly has got the 15th par 5. In the North Wester it's a brute. Even downwind it's a great hole. Or is the 4th the signature hole? It's a tough one

Mowbray's 15th par 4 is a great hole. But the par 4 18th is for me their signature hole. Even with a wedge in your hands the second shot gets tricky. Into the North Wester a long iron in can be very daunting.

Steenberg has got some great holes. The 18th is a great risk reward hole. Even if you lay up. A wedge in hand with a cross wind requires steely nerves. But the 7th is also a great hole. Witch one should it be.

Rondebosch has got some great holes. The old 16th par 4 now the 8th hole is one that any player remembers. Black river on the left and water right. It's only 300m long. But it's a great hole.

At Bellville the par 3 12th is a great hole. And will be remembered by anyone playing the course. I also like the 15th par 5.

Erinvale's 17th can make grown men cry (in agony and appreciation) But there are so many good holes there. The 14th par 3 is also very memorable. And the 18th is a great finishing hole!

Which holes on Atlantic beach, Milnerton and other Cape Town courses stand out?

Let me know if you agree. Let me know wich holes stand out on what courses for you.

Remember the most important tip in golf. 'Watch the ball'

See you on the fairways.
