Clovelly dished up a nice sunny day with a normal 30-40km/h South Easter blowing through the valley.
Any medal round in such conditions is always a great test.
I've managed to get my handicap down from 4.6 index to a 3.5 index in the first 15 days of 2021.
I feel to get the last 3.5 shots down to scratch I need to work more on decision making and course management than swing improvements. (Although I can defenitely improve that too.)
I Played solid on the back 9 with 8 pars and a drop. (And I did hit one pin for a birdie put that popped out.)
I made mistakes on the front 9. Just some decision making cost me. I made 3 birdies but 4 drops.
One over front 9. One over back 9 is getting closer. But I need to manage the course better to get better.
I have a tendency to pull a few short 5 foot puts. So I tried a new grip on my putter today.
Mike Michell from Michell golf gave me a Palms up grip to test out.
Its the same grip Ernie Els used to win on the Champions tour a few months ago.
They come in an Oversize and thinner option. I tried the thinner option. The teardrop shape feels great in your hands and instills nice confidence.
I didn't have any time to hit practice putts before the round. But by the second 9 I defenitely putted better with the grip and felt much less handsy.
There is a spesific methodology behind using these grips. I grip them left hand low palm up. And right hand high facing the hole.
But they are made to put both palms up, getting the shoulders more in to the stroke and the hands less active.
I practised my putting a bit after the round. And played the customary putting comp against the juniors hanging around.
I am happy to say that I kept the King of the putting green honours.
I think this grip will make a big difference to my putting stats.
Mike and Allen are both ex Sunshine tour players with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
They still shoot in the mid 60's on a regular basis.
Book a lesson. Take a nice drive out to the Deep South. And improve your game.
Drop me a comment below and I will put a nice word in with Mike to get one of these grips at a better price.
Swing it easy when it's breezy!
See you on the fairways.
